From the Files: The Second Coming

From the Files is a series presenting choice selections from my extensive and highly disorganized physical archives here at Home Base. Here you’ll find lost cartoons, unfinished art, and forgotten doodles. Enjoy.

yeats

Detail from a hand-drawn lettering piece I did in 2011 in the style of an illuminated manuscript, featuring Yeats’ 1919 poem The Second Coming:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Page of notes from an Ethics class I took in 2009. I want to make it very clear that doodling helps me concentrate.

A color study for a painting class I did at some point in college, featuring my all-time favorite musician. Here’s one of his best tracks from his 1978 album This Year’s Model:

This piece, drawn at the height of Occupy in late 2011, is a representation of the ravenous greed of the Ownership Class. Since this week’s entry contains foul language in big bold letters, I will put it under the fold:

franken

A caricature of Al Franken, probably drawn during his 2008 run for Senate. He turned out to be good enough and smart enough to beat John Kerry’s Republican stunt double Norm Coleman by 312 votes.

pugsley

Part of an old T-shirt design, probably from 2010 or 2011. This is another example of how I’ll often draw elements of an image separately and combine them digitally. Sadly, the old-timey car this dapper dog was driving is lost to the ages.

bozetti

I’m not sure exactly when this was drawn, but it features Frank Bozetti, a character that appeared in a few Sidwood strips in late 2005 and early 2006. I really must do something with this character again soon.
