Good People Drink Good Beer

I’ve just finished a new infographic poster which will soon be for sale in the store. It’s 24″ x 36″ and features a graph of most of the world’s beer styles.

From the Files: The Second Coming

From the Files is a series presenting choice selections from my extensive and highly disorganized physical archives here at Home Base. Here you’ll find lost cartoons, unfinished art, and forgotten doodles. Enjoy.

Detail from a hand-drawn lettering piece I did in 2011 in the style of an illuminated manuscript, featuring Yeats’ 1919 poem The Second Coming:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

A Modern Take on a Westeros Map

I made a Game of Thrones map as a design exercise:

Mrs. Brown’s Extra Special Bitter

esb_label

I made a label for my latest brew, a British ESB infused with Earl Grey tea and lavender. The beer is named for Queen Victoria, who acquired the nickname “Mrs. Brown” from the relationship — whose exact nature is still unknown — she had with her personal servant John Brown.

In 1997, the story was made into a film starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly:

PRIME TIME Game Board

PRIME TIME is a race game I’m developing based on the Ulam spiral and the peculiar properties of prime numbers.

I was inspired to make it after watching a YouTube video from Numberphile (an awesome channel for anyone remotely interested in math and science):

I’m currently in the midst of tweaking the rules and game cards. Once I have those pinned down, I’ll be making up a prototype to unleash on the Carnegie Mellon campus, and probably be setting up a Kickstarter to put it into production if that goes well. Stay tuned!
